Entrepreneurial Women – Fashionably Business Minded

Very flattering article on the Entrepreneurial Women Blog by Cathy Watters.

“Good-looking, well-fitting clothes can help women feel beautiful and empowered,” says Malene Grotrian. She and her business partner, Jenna Fortin, own Malene Grotrian Design (www.malenegrotrian.com), a company that creates fashionable clothes for women.

Just over a year old, Malene’s company is represented in ten stores across Western Canada. The only Canadian designer to have a show in New York Fashion Week (NYFW) 2009, Malene drew attention not only for her stunning designs, but for showcasing West Coast designers only: she accessorized with Jane Monteiro’s jewellery and Fluevog shoes.

Malene gained a lot of publicity because of this, and appeared on the front page of the Vancouver Sun’s Style section in September, 2009, resulting in over 150,000 visits to her website.

What’s Been Happening

After her work was noticed by someone who knew the producer for the New York Metropolitan show at Vancouver Fashion Week in March 2009, Malene Grotrian was invited to the Metropolitan show on West 18th street as a part of New York Fashion Week in September 2009. As coined by the Vancouver Sun, Grotrian is the very first Vancouver designer to show in New York during Fashion Week.

She will be showing her spring 2010 line, tailored pieces featuring silks and a neutral, pastel palette. Her signature bustiers will be making an appearance. Grotrian describes her new line as a western, Scandinavian simplicity mixed with a touch of Japanese style. She has been focusing on a softer, more feminine look. Fashion Week runs from September 10th to 18th.

Grotrian is being sponsored by Fluevog Shoes, a company that began by happy chance back at the ripe old age of 1970. John Fluevog has built the business into a multinational corporation, forging a name for himself as a creator of some of the world’s most distinctive shoes. For more information on Fluevog, or to see where you can pick up a pair of his shoes for yourself, visit their website: Fluevog

Malene will be pairing up with Jane Monteiro, a textiles artist and fledgling jewelry designer. Monteiro has been hard at work putting together classic, timeless pieces that will meld with Grotrian’s designs. Like Grotrian, this will be Monteiro’s first experience in New York Fashion Week. You can view her work here: Toranj Kayvon

Sujin Park is a freelance fashion, hair, and make-up stylist based in Vancouver. She will be providing make-up and hair styling for Malene’s models. Park’s work has been featured in various print media in fashion editorials. Each year Park travels around the world to new destinations to soak up the culture and get a different perspective. She incorporates this into her work. Her favorite color is red, and it shows. You can visit her website here: Sujin Styles

Malene will be holding another show back home in Vancouver on September 24th at Canvas Lounge, so if you can’t make it to her show in New York, be sure not to miss this one! Fluevog Shoes also sponsors.
